As we reported some months back, p22 type foundry has released their new Frank Lloyd Wright inspired font titled "Midway." Based on Mr. Wright's own handwriting samples from historical drawings associated with Midway Gardens, the ill-fated 1913 Beer Garden, the new set is meant to be a more casual type face and can work in conjunction with their other FLLW font offerings. The set contains two alphabet versions and extras--small drawings and icons like squares, sprites and other organic and geometric images.
A new Wright typeface is always welcome, since the previous offerings have been over-used and over-exposed (if we see Eaglefeather one more time, we're going to scream!) Overall, "Midway" is interesting, but not as engaging as was hoped. Some of the extras seem like a stretch, with several squiggly arrows and other doo-dads that don't really add much to the mix and feel like filler. We would applaud the addition of a sanctioned Unity Temple font (with appropriate extras) or one based on the graphic and type elements from the Wendingen publications or the posters from the American Systems Built projects.
