No other architect in the world enjoys the continued interest, study and design adoration that Frank Lloyd Wright does. Nearly 50 years after his death, building he designed are still being lovingly cared for and even built. Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House and Graycliff Estate are being extensively renovated, and today the city will add to its collection of architectural treasures with the opening of the Wright-designed rowing boathouse. Nearly a century after it's original design, Wright’s Rowing Boathouse is realized on the shores of Buffalo’s Black Rock Channel. Originally included as part of the designs in Wright’s Wasmuth Portfolio series of distinctive Prairie Style lithographs, the $5.5 million Rowing Boathouse will be home to the nation’s largest rowing club.
No doubt, this building will be controversial in the same fashion that Monona Terrace, Blue Sky Mausoleum and the Massaro/Chahroudi House have been, but the fact that Wright is capable of firing people's imaginations to this day is something that should be celebrated. Check out the new Boathouse the next time you travel to Buffalo and enjoy seeing a work of art on paper become a work of art to walk through!
