What A Treat!

PrairieMod Photo Journal: A Fall Weekend at Taliesin in Spring Green, WI

As we hinted this past weekend, a few of the PrairieMod Squad members were invited to spend a night at Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin Estate. Ryan Hewson and Christian Butler, apprentices from the FLW School of Architecture, wanted to show us the early progress on their new shelters at the estate. We'll be posting more info later with photos and drawings, but check out this old post of another apprentice's desert shelter at Taliesin West.

And no, we did not see the ghost of Mamah Cheney wandering around!

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Sad to say, but the ideal solution to recovering the lost glory of the mahogany woodwork in the "PrairieMod"-ification of the red house turned out to be a dud.

Water Dome Works!

Sometimes ideas just need future technology and dedicated people to make them a reality. This was the case for the "Water Dome" fountain, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Florida Southern College campus in Lakeland, Florida. As stated in the article on the Seattle Times' website:

Thanks to computers and extensive restoration, the "Water Dome" finally produces the three-story dome of water Wright envisioned 70 years ago as the centerpiece of his architectural design for Florida Southern College's campus.

"He was very far ahead of his time, and sometimes materials are just catching up with him," said New York-based architect Jeff Baker, who heads preservation work at the college where 12 structures make up the largest collection of Wright's works on a single site.

In the midst of all the bad news people are bombarded with on a daily basis, it's really cool to have stories that show with imagination and ingenuity, anything is possible. Click over here to read the article and enjoy!

A Legacy For Sale: The Wright Thing To Do?

A worrisome trend has precipitated with the advent of ebay. With the rise in popularity of Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings and decor over the decades, the separating and selling off of Wright-related items has also risen. When furniture, windows, sconces etc. are sold-off from the site they were integrally meant for, that site is diminished in a way that it may never recover from.

Popham Design has taken the traditional Moroccan way to make tiles and put a modern spin on it. Check out the process that goes into making these tiles.

Virtual Jester House

Jens Oliver Kraemer, an architecture student from Stuttgart, Germany has an interesting virtual tour of one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most engaging residential designs, the Ralph Jester House (1938). As stated on the site:

The Project for Ralph Jester at Palos Verdes, California, is the first residence design where Wright uses the circle to the fullest...The house was designed for a coastal desert climate and a client working in the movie business. The use of circles in any design poses obvious problems: How to deal with the interstices between the circles where they touch one another, how to deal with furnishing...( and how to get matching interior renderings in perspective view...)

This design was never built for its original client, however a version of it does exist on the campus of Taliesin West (brought to life by Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer.) It's a remarkable use of space and one that obviously fired the imagination of Jens.

One last thought--we have always been amused that Wright was the trend-setter for the idea of the "infinity pool"--a staple of the (once) popular TV show, the O.C.

Tarantino Studio Preserves Places Wright

The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy posted a link to a website we found very interesting. Tarantino Studio is a group of architects, preservationists and designers that have worked on some pretty sweet projects--including some big name Wright-related houses. Hanna, Christie, Kessler, etc.)

They've posted some great photos detailing aspects of the work done to these Usonian gems--including shots of some of the Wright designed furniture they've executed.

What Would Wright Do? This is the question that is plaguing the Landmark's Preservation Committee in New York right now. The object of the dilemma is the famed Guggenheim Museum and what color it should be.

PrairieMod Monday

I decided that one of the first steps in making over the little red house would be to attempt to strip away the paint that now covers up the original wood work in the great room. I figured it would be a good start and one that would be relatively low cost, yet make a satisfyingly visible difference in the space. But with all those overhead beams, how to do it without making a giant mess, ruining the wood or breathing noxious fumes?

Custom Lighting

Most recently I've been on a search for lighting to use in my great room. I'd like something that is interesting and gives off some ambient light. I found these lights on Room & Board's website and was very intrigued. You have the option to choose between 4 different designs...each with different color options and 3 different size shades. I love to have options, so now I just have to figure out which one I like best!

Hold the Date!

I just received a heads up from Chicago Bauhaus & Beyond regarding an event they will be hosting on November 18th, 2007. More details will follow, but word has it that CBB members will be able to visit two homes in Glen Ellyn, Illinois....one by Paul Schweikher and one by Keck and Keck (owned by artists Samuel and Eleanor Himmelfarb) that is hitting the National Registry instead of the wrecking ball!

Restoring The Turkel House

Norman Silk and Dale Morgan are taking on the wonderful task of restoring the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Dorothy Turkel House in Detroit, Michigan (1955). The house is one of Wright's Usonian Automatic designs made from standard and specialized concrete blocks. It was in woeful condition due and in danger of being lost, until the new owners decided to save it. What's equally nice is that they've been posting photos of the progress on Flickr.com for people to enjoy. Follow the link to see some the labor of love that is repairing the Turkel house. Enjoy!

Ball Garden Pavilion

I took an excursion the other day to West Chicago, IL to see the Ball Garden Pavilion on the campus of the Ball Horticultural Company. David Woodhouse Architects, the same great firm that designed the Morton Arboretum Visitor Center in Lisle, IL.

The pavilion design won an award last year and is an environmental sculpture with layered wood leaves that open up towards the sky, staggered above and below steel beams to allow sunlight to wink through but overlapping in plan to catch the rain. Collected rainwater flows panel to panel in gutter spouts of bent steel to fall into a pool of water lilies. The firm wanted to create a pavilion that would be transformed by the weather: from cool shade shelter in the sunlight to trickling fountain in the rain.

I highly recommend a trip to check it out if you are a local Chicagoan! Kudos to the guys over at David Woodhouse Architects. They've managed to create a 21st-century structure that connects to its site and makes use of innovative ideas.

Classic Century Dinnerware

The other day I was walking through the mall and I stopped at Crate & Barrel to see what was new. As soon as I walked in, an amazing set of dinnerware (pictured above) caught my attention. I was drawn to the simple and organic shapes. At closer inspection, I found out they were designed by wold-renowned designer Eva Zeisel.

Below is a description of her dinnerware:

Sensuous, multifunctional shapes with a pedigreed past are reborn for a new century. Originally designed in 1952 by world-renowned designer Eva Zeisel, this timeless tabletop art makes a comeback in a creamy neutral. Zeisel, considered one of the foremost designers of the 20th century, created sculptural pieces with rounded curves, arches, teardrops and wave motifs. Even the plates are a soft oval, just this side of round. Out of production for many years, during which time it became a collector's item, this pattern has been resurrected just for us. Each organic, elegant piece is a masterpiece of form and function.

This set would be beautiful for the holidays or everyday.

Florida Southern College DVD Tour

Douglas Anders, who runs the Frank Lloyd Wright Newsblog, recently posted on a DVD tour he was sent of the Wright designed Florida Southern College. As he states in the post:

"I’m often guilty forgetting that Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture is magnificent. I sometimes stuff it all into bins labeled “Usonian”, “Prairie” and “Other”.

“Oh, look: an L-shaped Usonian. Seen it before.”

Yep, I’m a philistine.

But that is why I enjoyed the FSC campus tour DVD so much – the buildings are surprising and magnificent and wonderful and the DVD captures that nicely — particularly a few shots that show the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel in the golden cast of a setting tropical sun."

The Eames 100th Anniversary...Pachyderm?

The 1st anniversary is traditionally paper. The 25th is Silver. The 50th is gold. The 100th is...Elephant? It is if it's the 100th anniversary of Charles Eames' birth. Vitra is celebrating by:

"...introducing a limited anniversary edition of the Eames Plywood Elephant, a legendary furniture sculpture that was designed in 1945 but never produced for general distribution and sale.  Of the two known prototypes, only one remains in the Eames Family Archives.

Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by elephants. Many images of these gentle giants are found in Charles' photographic documentations of Indian culture and the circus world. The Plywood Elephant was designed as a toy for children, but also as a striking sculptural object that makes a statement in any environment with its vigorous curves and delightful character."

The Anniversary Edition is packaged in a special collector's box and the serial number of each Plywood Elephant is engraved on a small aluminum plaque. The elephants will be available to ship in November.

Only 1000 of these molded plywood pachyderms in each color will be made...at $2007.00 a pop, that may also be the amount of people in the world who can afford it. Check out the jolly Jumbo here and happy birthday, Charles!

Touring The Ward Willits House

We just finished the afternoon tours and all we have to say is "wow!"

There were so many knock-out houses on the tour it made our heads spin. The 1901 Frank Lloyd Wright designed Ward Willits House was just one of the fantastic homes that we saw.

FLW Building Conference: Day 3

Day 3 has kicked off with a documentary about Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House in Los Angeles. There was a screen with a 2D version and a 3D version (complete with glasses). The film was written and produced by Tom Koester. More details to follow thru the day and with our podcast recap tonight.....

Michael Graves Keynote Recap

I had planned to blog about the Michael Graves Keynote from the Merchandise Mart on my iPhone, but had difficulty getting a cellular signal. Nevertheless, here is my recap...

I admit, I didn't know much about Graves prior to the presentation except for his products for Target and some of his architectural works like the Swan & Dolphin resorts at Disney World. Some consider him to be America's greatest living architect.

It was interesting to hear and see the stories and images Graves shared through his slide presentation. He started by talking about his youth in Indiana during the 1940's and 1950's. During the 60's he went to the University of Cinicinati, then on to Harvard for graduate school. After Harvard, he received a scholarship to study in Rome. The time Graves spent in Rome had a tremendous impact on his design sensibilities.

Wingspread Is Amazing!

With the morning lectures over, we're starting to tour the different sites around Racine. We stopped at Barry Byrne's St. Patrick Catholic church, the Hardy House, the Edgar Tafel designed Albert House and we're just leaving Wingspread (the Johnson family's former home.) It's truly breathtaking!

Morning Update from FLW Building Conservancy Conference via iPhone

The morning sessions are progressing and I'm getting ready to go to a breakout session about the conservation of Price Tower and the Usonian Gordon House.

The day started with a short presentation from John Harwood from Oberlin College in Ohio. He discussed the Usonian Weltzheimer House by Wright. Next followed a panel discussion with Lynda Waggoner of Fallingwater, architectural critic Blair Kamin, architect T. Gunney Harboe and architectural scholar Richard Longsteth. This discussion was quite engaging and focused on the topic of Wright structures being turned from private to public.

I'll share more details in my podcast recap tonight, plus I have figured out how to post photos from my iPhone. After lunch I'll be on a tour of the Avery Coonley estate and there should be some great photo ops.

Moblogging from the FLW Building Conservancy Conference

I'm at the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy Conference at the Hilton in Northbrook, IL. This is my first attempt at "moblogging" on my iPhone. I haven't figured out if I can post photos, but if I can I will.

The event has just started with welcoming remarks from Executive Director, Ron Scherubel. The day's tours and lectures seem promising...so I'll try to provide updates throughout. I'll also be posting a podcast recap at the end of the day, so look for that.

NPR On Wright Campus

NPR recently ran a story on the efforts of Florida Southern College to restore it's Frank Loyd Wright designed campus. Home to the largest collections of Wright designed buildings for a single site, the structures have fallen on hard times and are in serious danger. As stated in the article:

In the years after they were completed, Florida Southern made changes to the Wright buildings dictated by the college's needs and the changing times. Air conditioning was added, and the old library was converted into offices. The science building was modernized; now, big ventilation ducts dominate the old roofline.     

 Baker said Florida Southern has tough decisions ahead about how much of Wright's original vision it can still accommodate. Baker has done similar work on other historic campuses, including The College of William & Mary and the University of Virginia.

Over time, Florida Southern's campus will be seen in the same light as Thomas Jefferson's design for the University of Virginia, Baker said.                         

"This will be considered one of our most precious sites," Baker said. "Frank Lloyd Wright was a genius who comes around maybe once in 500 years, a mind like that."

One Couple "Sweeton's" Their Life Style

A recent article posted on the Courier Post Online talks about one couple's adventure in purchasing the Frank Lloyd Wright designed John and Muriel Sweeton House in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. In an era of people pursuing super-sized "dream" homes of ever increasing size, Christine Denario and Dan Nichols set their sites on a 57-year old, small 3 bedroom, 1 bath, no garage little architectural gem. With a tented ceiling, use of natural materials, dramatic cantilevers and lots of natural light, this home is a Mid-Century modern masterpiece. As stated in the article:

"I've known about the house for about 20 years, but I never thought I'd be able to buy it so I just put it out of my mind," said Dan Nichols, an architect and longtime Wright admirer who lives in the Lancaster, Pa., area.

When he saw the house listed for sale on the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy Web site last winter, Nichols felt a jolt of excitement. Maybe it was possible after all to achieve one of his dreams, he thought.

We applaud stewards like Christine and Dan who buck the trend and choose to live "Wright-sized." We hope they are able to share their experiences on living in, restoring and making their new/old home uniquely theirs.
