Napkin Nirvanna

Our friends at the blog, Design*Sponge recently posted on what have to be the most beautiful napkins I've ever seen. 

Plait was formed by Jennifer Pellman, a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art and the University of Illinois School of Architecture. She hand weaves beautifully simple and elegant napkins in her Madison, Wisconsin studio. As stated on her website:

We live through our senses. There is an intimacy in soft, cotton cloth on your lips, and pleasure in attention to the details of every day living. A love of cooking and tasting inspires the designs of plait textiles. The unique napkins are handwoven in the U.S.A. from 100% cotton yarn. The textiles feature the natural selvedges, a characteristic rarely left as a finished edge in commercial textiles.

It's seems weird to go ga-ga over something as seemingly mundane as napkins. But it's the artistic spirit and love of craft that Ms. Pellman pours into her handmade items that makes them so special. Napkins are a synonymous icon of our throw-away society; so to have someone lovingly craft heirloom quality napkins is a welcome way to make us think about what we keep and what we toss.
