Project X Car

Picture_7

No, it's not related to an X-Men sequel. Apparently, the race is on to develop a realistic design for a 100-mpg car. Is it do-able?

Well, I certainly hope so! The people who comprise the X PRIZE Foundation (a not-for-profit organization that raises multimillion-dollar prizes for scientific and technological challenges) also think it's a goal worth putting money up for as well. That's why their pledging a $10 million dollar Automotive X PRIZE to whomever can achieve a marketable car that can "go-the-distance."

As stated in a recent MSN.com article:

"Our competition is not about concept vehicles. Our competition is not about science experiments," says Don Foley, the senior director of the Automotive X PRIZE (AXP for short). The race is about proving to the world that ultra-efficient cars are not only possible, but safe, affordable, and desirable for mainstream Americans.

Some of the images of the cars look a little goofy, but hopefully an idea will emerge that will put a common-sense car on the road--and our society on the road towards a more sustainable future.

Now if they can just make a car that runs completely on garbage you put in the tank...
