Blair Kamin, architecture critic for the Chicago Tribune, has started a new blog called "The Skyline" with the stated goal of "assessing the highs and lows of Chicago architecture."
So, does Chicago need another architecture blog? Anyone who is familiar with Mr. Kamin's writing and critical analysis will answer emphatically: "Yes."
As Blair states on his blog:
Whether you're just getting acquainted with architecture or you just
can't get enough of it, this is your place. This blog is a chronicle of
news and events as well as a platform for criticism and commentary. But
it is, most of all, a forum for conversation about the first city of
American architecture--birthplace of the skyscraper, home to Louis
Sullivan, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and countless other design demigods,
a place that continues to enthrall and exasperate with extremes of
design quality that are as wide-ranging as its weather.
My hope is that this blog will be a collective exploration between
critic and reader, and reader and reader, where my observations serve
as conversation starters, not the last word. I'll be focusing on
Chicago, of course, but if Sam Zell and the Tribune's travel budget are
willing, I'll also be looking at significant designs around the nation
and the world to put the architectural action in Chicago and its
suburbs into global perspective.
Still in it's infancy, the blog has already covered a a range of topics including the ongoing work on the Calatrava Spire, Jeanne Gang's rising architectural star, sprawl near the Farnsworth House and the sad fate of a beautiful Arts & Crafts house in Winnetka, IL that could possibly be designed by Dwight Perkins.
Check out the blog and delve deeper into these topics and others. I look forward to following Mr. Kamin's progress and we will definitely share key stories with PrairieMod Readers. Enjoy!
