Two major renovation projects are in the planning stages for the little red house! With the "model room" pretty much done, we are setting the stage for some major overhauls to parts of the main living area and the bedrooms' closet core.
Over the next few weeks, I'll give you a sneak peek at some of the ideas behind these next steps in the "PrairieMod-ification" of our little atomic ranch. Let's look at the main living space...
If you've been following the ongoing work happening in the little red house, you've hopefully enjoyed seeing some of the ways we've tried to integrate "principled thinking" in addressing the challenges faced. One of the major issues we're going to try and tackle is what to do with the fact that there are just way too many doors in and out of the house (4 to be exact!)
We're planning on replacing 2 of the oldest and most drafty doors later this spring. The door and old picture window seen above in the dining area will be replaced with a new energy efficient sliding glass door. This will allow more natural light in, save precious space by sliding open instead of swinging open and it will save on the energy bills with the use of high-efficiency glass. It's a win/win/win!
What was once the original front door to the house is now a drafty, obsolete annoyance (since we have 2 more entry doors in the "office" area.)
We're planning on taking that old door out and putting in a picture window that continues the look and rhythm of the other two large windows located on that wall. The effect will be that of a complete window wall--three larger windows, three smaller, clerestory windows and a triangular glass pattern above them. The new window will also be an energy efficient thermopane like the others. More natural light, energy savings and an overall, unifying appearance. Win/win/win again!
When it's all said and done, it will be an amazing first step towards the transformation of this very important living space in our home.
