In honor of Earth Day, I thought I'd share a little article I found in last Sunday's Chicago Tribune about the little town of Stelle, Illinois. So where the heck is Stelle?
Stelle is approximately 90 minutes south of Chicago's Loop. the little town was founded in 1973 when a group of green-minded Chicagoans decided to leave the rat race and and form a community based around the ideas of self-sufficiency.
As stated in the Tribune article:
They built solar-panel and straw-bale homes. They raised their own food. They cultivated native plantings. They even had their own Earth Day celebration way before it was cool.
Sounds very Utopian. If you're intrigued to check out this little green town on the prairie, Stelle is having an Earth Day Open House on May 3rd and 4th. There will be workshops covering topics like permaculture, shared land and native plants as well as home tours and lots of community grown food to eat. For more information, check out the link.
