So, I'm at home this evening surfing the web on my laptop while my wife is in our workout room on the treadmill, watching TV......when all of the sudden our power goes out during a springtime lightning storm! It stayed out for almost an hour. The wireless internet was cut, the dryer stopped tumbling, the dishwasher became calm, the heater shut-off, no TV, no treadmill....our digital, mechanical modern life came to a screeching halt.
As a result, we welcomed the situation and embraced the dark, calming
quietness of the moment and lit our Big Dipper Beeswax candles. There
was a soft, warm glow inside the house and all the lights in the
neighborhood were virtually out. It was incredibly refreshing to be
"forced" into this. We both sat and chilled, while enjoying the simple
company of one another....sans distractions, noise and bright lights.
It was absolutely brilliant and honestly a bit freeing to be released
from the shackles of modern life for just a short span of time.
When the power was up again, we turned the wet towels back on in the dryer, fired up the dishwasher, turned the heat up and got right back on the computer. However, the experience lingered in our minds. We may have stumbled into something that has appeal as a weekly opportunity to power down for 1 hour and get back to a simple way of enjoying life. It is funny to think that you sometimes need to disconnect in order to reconnect in a modern world.
Try it out one evening, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much a we did!
