One of our readers tipped us off about a feature on Edward Humrich's work in the May/June issue of Old House Journal.
If you aren't familiar with Humrich, his Chicago area residential architecture features glass with extensive use of common brick and wood. While influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, he tried very hard not to copy a style, but rather the ideas and principles behind great architecture. In a lecture at the Chicago Architecture Foundation in 2007, Joann Gand of Chicago Bauhaus & Beyond described him as a Prairie Modernist architect. Apparently, Humrich found inspiration in this Wright quote, which he often repeated:
Never copy anything. Try to find the principles involved and work out your own answer.
