Spring is in the air, and that means it is time for that exciting time in Chicago known as Wright Plus weekend. The PrairieMod Squad will be out and about during the festivities, posting on the events and sharing the details of the houses on the walk.
Tonight was the V.I.P. Chairman's Reception held at the exquisitely restored Heurtley House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1902. It was an amazing experience to have unfettered access to this Prairie School masterpiece. Here's some interesting facts about this house for readers to enjoy:
• The Heurtleys purchased their lot in March, 1902 for $9,250.00
• The building permit is dated June 5, 1902. The cost was stated as $8,000.00 but this is probably a low estimate.
• The main living level of the home is on the upper floor; the ground level initially contained the servant's quarters, guestrooms and the playroom.
• The home was converted into a two-family unit in the 1930s and the east end of the veranda had a master bath that was installed in the 1940s and was removed by the most recent previous owners.
•The planters on the east & west corners of the veranda have their own built-in watering systems.
• The ceiling and wall colors of the living room have been restored to the original color and texture.
• The living room inglenook was recreated by the previous owners using old photographs and distinguishing marks on the floor and fireplace.
• Wright designed the home to have a tree house-like feel.
It is truly a knock-out house! For more info on the home's complete restoration and to see some images of the interior, check out this great video documentary. Tune in tomorrow for a preview of the houses on the tour!
