Our friends at Inhabitat recently posted on Chi-town's Eco-Bridge initiative. The plan is for it to act as a breakwater for Monroe Harbor, create additional recreation space for rowing and swimming, add an observation tower for skyline viewing and incorporate some eco-friendly wind turbine features as well. Sounds like a fantastic idea, huh? Hard to believe, but the concept was originally envisioned in the 1909 Burnham Plan for Chicago. Old school is the new school!

Back when Mayor Richard J. Daley was alive he proposed a series of islands in the lake connected by bridges and paths. The Mayor was an avid fisherman and this would make the lake more accessible. No eco involved just economics. The city published a nice brochere showing the islands. Burnham had proposed two piers, but just Navy pier got built. If only Chicago had the foresight to implement some of these ideas early it would be a greater city than it is.

Thanks for this really fascinating info, Felix. It would be great if Chicago could continue this trend of conscientious building!
