In four short months, the Taliesin Prefabrication Prototype has been transformed from a concept to real space. We look forward to cladding the exterior of the structure by mid summer. The majority of the work for the summer will be detailing the interior space in preparation for our fall migration back to Taliesin West.
When the prototype is complete this fall, it will serve as housing for visiting faculty, architects and lecturers. The prototype will be exhibited to the visiting public at Taliesin West; to demonstrate the power of a considered, well-designed, small space (430 square feet interior) in contrast to the suburban tract home that is the dominant housing type in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Floor plan: the sliding doors capture natural breezes, the water catchment system is located off the bedroom. The skylight over the shower washes the user in natural light.
The project will demonstrate passive and active environmental control systems such as, natural ventilation and lighting, water catchment, modest space, top-tier insulation, a gray water system and solar panels. All of these systems combined, will allow the structure to be self sufficient. I look forward to sharing progress on the prototype with the PrairieMod readership throughout the summer!
