Saturday was the 10th annual meeting of the Walter Burley Griffin Society of America in the idyllic suburb of Kenilworth, Illinois. PrairieMod reader, Paul R. sent us some of his photos for everyone to enjoy. See them and read more about the event after the jump...
The morning's lectures were extremely engaging: with talks on the relationship between Kenilworth's planning by George W. Maher, a look at the history of Teco pottery and Walter Burley Griffin's connection to Kenilworth. The afternoon was spent walking around the neighborhood touring some of the houses that make it a very special place.
In addition to seeing the exhibits at the Kenilworth Historical Society, there were two George W. Maher houses, one Walter Burley Griffin house and one John S. Van Bergen house. We also saw several houses by these various architects from the street along the way. Here's a look at some of what we saw:
Henry W. Schultz House by George W. Maher (1907)
Barbara Erwin House by John S. Van Bergen (1922)
William S. Orth Houses by Walter Burley Griffin (1908) – a pair of houses designed next to each other, we got to walk through one of them.
There was one other Maher house we walked through and several other Prairie School houses that we saw the exteriors of that afternoon. All together, it was a fantastic afternoon! If you missed the event this year, sign-up for info at the WBGSoA's website to find out about next year's tour! Thanks again to Paul R. for the photos!
