Greetings from Grand Rapids, Michigan! The PrairieMod Squad is here covering the Meyer May House Centennial events hosted by the Steelcase Company (the remarkable stewards of the Prairie School masterpiece.) We had a great first day and thought we'd share some of the things we saw. More after the jump...
We left for Grand Rapids from Chicago this morning and had a smooth ride up and around the coast of Lake Michigan. We arrived in town, checked into our hotel and met-up with our Steelcase Company hosts and other symposium attendees at the stunning Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.
What an amazing place! Not only are there acres of stunning wild flowers, trees and grasses but the architecture of the conservatory is remarkable as well.
We enjoyed a guided tram tour of the grounds and world-class sculpture collection (including pieces by Rodin, Oldenberg, Goldsworthy, Moore, Calder and many more). One especially unique piece is a full-size reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's 500 year-old design for a horse sculpture.
The tour ended at the Michigan's Farm Garden section of the park, which featured some quaint farm buildings and vegetable garden.
We enjoyed drinks, food and conversation before sitting down for a delicious dinner in the reproduction period farmhouse.
It was a great start to what promises to be an amazing symposium! We have a full schedule tomorrow, so look for coverage of the day's events tomorrow evening. Until then!
