Want to increase your knowledge of some of the most famous buildings in Chicago? Looking for the perfect gift for that architecture-fanatic on your list? Then you're gonna want to get your hands on this 9-book set from Pomegranate titled the Chicago Building Books series. Read more after the jump...
It's Chicago in a compact and colorful format! The 9 volumes in the Chicago Building Books series focus on some important works of architecture in the city, including:
• The Chicago Board of Trade
• The Sears Tower (now Willis Tower)
• The Rookery
• Soldier Field
• The Merchandise Mart
• The Auditorium Building
• The Reliance Building
• North Michigan Avenue
• Marshall Fields Store (Now Macy's)
Each book in the series was developed with the Chicago Architecture Foundation and tell the unique stories behind the buildings featured. One nice feature of the series is that they are small enough to fit conveniently on a shelf or night stand, yet still big enough for you to enjoy the copious amounts of beautiful photography found within. The text is also approachable and enjoyable: enough info to please people who already know about Chicago's architecture or those who are totally new to it.
My personal favorite was the book on the Rookery. It contains a detailed narrative and lots of photos of the painstaking work that went into restoring the building and its stunning 1907 Frank Lloyd Wright lobby re-design. After reading the book, it made me want to go down to the city and visit the lobby to see all of that hard work in person.
