Over the weekend I visited a museum that anyone interested in graphic design, printing and typography is definitely going to want to see. Read more after the jump...
The Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin is the only museum dedicated to the preservation, study, production and printing of wood type. With 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns, Hamilton's collection is one of the premier wood type collections in the world.
When we visited, we had a fantastic tour and met museum director and printer, Jim Moran, who showed us firsthand how the type was made and then actually used. It really brought the history of this special chapter in the history of graphic design to life. The museum is in the process of cataloging all of their wood type treasures and even re-printing posters from old plates and selling them for the benefit of the museum!
I would highly recommend a visit to this totally unique place. Visit their website here. And if you go, stay a few nights in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Bernard Schwartz House to complete your ultimate Two Rivers design experience!
