Columbus Business First reports that three Ohio historic buildings, including Louis Sullivan's Home Building Association Bank, will receive a historic tax credit. The 97-year-old "Jewel Box" bank in Newark, OH will receive a $431,260 credit to help pay for a $2.2 million rehab project and ultimately be used for offices and retail space. Read more here.

People will get their chance to finally see the inside of the newly restored Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Park Inn Hotel in Mason City, IA when guided tours will be provided on Monday, Sept. 5, 2011. The tours and a picnic in Central Park, will take place between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and kick-off a full week of celebration activities. To get all the info on the events, follow the link.

If you've always wanted to see the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed plantation in Yemassee, SC known as "Auldbrass", then you're in luck: Tickets for the November 5-6, 2011 tour will go on sale next week from the Beaufort County Open Land Trust. The cost will be $85 per person and there will also be a picnic lunch available at Tomotley Plantation for $15 per person.
Also, the Open Land Trust will host Eric Lloyd Wright for a lecture event at the University of South Carolina Beaufort Performing Arts Center on November 5, 2011. Tickets for the lecture event are $50 per person.
All tickets can be purchased here or you can call the Open Land Trust office at 521-2175.

While significant steps were made yesterday to move the house one step closer towards demolition, Richard's son, Dion Neutra desperately tries to raise support to save the 1955 house, but it may be too late. Blair Kamin's Cityscapes blog reports on the upcoming September 8, 2011 opening of a new exhibit at the 10-year old Milwaukee Art Museum Santiago Calatrava-designed addition. The exhibit will be titled "Building a Masterpiece: Santiago Calatrava and the Milwaukee Art Museum" and will include Calatrava's models, drawings and watercolors. Read more about it here.

A recent Crain's Chicago Business article announced the aims of the 500-plus member Unitarian Congregation to pursue direct involvement in raising the estimated $25 million it will take to completely restore Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple as well as an adjacent site and $10 million for a cultural and educational center to be used by the church and other organizations.
This news raises more questions than answers: like where's the secular, non-profit Unity Temple Restoration Foundation's role in all of this if the Congregation is taking point on restoration? How's a church group going to raise upwards of $30 million? How are they going to keep the rabid Wrightophiles molified over an adjacent building plan?

Here's a link to an article on globegazette.com about the newly restored Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Park Inn Hotel in Mason City, IA getting some custom carpeting installed for "comfort and acoustics".
Wright didn't design carpeting originally for the hotel, so there might be some grumbling from purists that this flooring choice isn't (w)right. Read more here and feel free to weigh-in on the matter.

Eric S. sent a link to an Organic home in Wisconsin for sale designed by Michael McGuire, a Stillwater, Minnesota-based architect, friend of John H. Howe, and mentor to architect Kelly Davis.
According to Eric, this was the first house he designed and built for himself in the early 1960s. Check out the listing and more photos here.

Scott T. found this sweet little Usonian-esque home in Boise, Idaho designed by someone named Jerry Hill. It was apparently built it in the early 1980’s for his aging mother-in-law and is only about 750 square feet. Now you can see it for yourself—it's available as an overnight rental! The current owner of the massive Old Main Post Office building straddling Congress Avenue in Chicago revealed a new plan for redeveloping the vacant building and area around it into a 2,000-foot skyscraper that would unseat the Willis Tower as the tallest building in North America. Considering the current economic climate, this skyscraper dream might be more of a pie-in-the-sky dream. Read more here.

Samara owner, Dr. John Christian, has lent the West Lafayette Public Library 20 prints of Frank Lloyd Wright drawings from his collection. The drawings are displayed in the chronological order in which Wright designed them, showing the progress of his ideas. Read more about it here.

Mark Hertzberg sent a link to an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the Calatrava-designed Milwaukee Art Museum's "wings" being a little off kilter and causing a stir among people who saw its lopsided look. Shocking news: During the same weekend as the 85th anniversary celebration of the Neutra Practice, it was revealed that the Richard Neutra-designed Kronish Residence, in Beverly Hills, CA (1955) is slated FOR DESTRUCTION next week! This just in: Frank Lloyd Wright's California Textile Block masterpiece, the 1924 Ennis House has be sold to business executive Ron Burkle for just under $4.5 million. This is wonderful news and Mr. Burkle's commitment to complete the rehabilitation of this important iconic architectural work is heartening as well. Frank Lloyd Wright student John Lautner claimed to have been made "physically ill" by the city of Los Angeles. He took matters into his own well-trained hands and designed a variety of notable homes, many of which have been used as film locations. This New York Times blurb mentions the John Lautner Foundation's plans to celebrate what would have been Lautner's 100th birthday. If you're in Los Angeles or Marquette, Michigan, and plan to attend, we'd love a report.
